The hardware platform of the voltage/current (U/I) Source
basically consists of a low-cost microcontroller and a Sepic
converter circuit. Figure 6 shows the hardware block diagram
of the U/I Source circuit.
The PC application communicates via USB with a low-cost,
Cortex-M3 microcontroller LPC1343 [11] from NXP [12].
This microcontroller features, besides standard μC peripherals,
a built-in USB bootloader mode, which enables students, in
case of a firmware update, to upgrade the μC firmware by
themselves.
The Sepic converter circuit is built upon discrete components,
which helps students to understand, how converter
circuits are operating. Hence, the inductor current, the diode
current, the output current, and the output voltage is measured
by current monitors. The sample data of these currents is
transmitted to the PC application and displayed within a graph.
This additional feature enables students to investigate the
operating modes of the Sepic converter circuit. As part of
the research process, courses at the university were precisely
analyzed. The result of this analysis is represented in Table IV.
The U/I Source is USB powered and features standard
laboratory output connectors to supply an external load. Furthermore,
this device is as small as a standard credit card,
which makes it easy to transport. The PC application, which
is used to configure the hardware platform and to display the
measured currents & voltages, is described in section IX-D.
